OCTOBER & NOVEMBER

BWE Family Spotlight

Khare Family – Diwali is the most important festival of the year in Hinduism. Diwali is derived from the word “Deepavali,” which means “a row of lights.” Celebrants light rows of traditional clay oil lamps outside their homes to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.”

This November is Native American Heritage Month! “It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation. We honor the culture and heritage of these remarkable Americans who deeply enrich the quality and character of our Nation.”

The BWE PTA & Cultural Arts Committee would also like to wish a Happy Diwali to our families of South Asian descent! Also known as the “Festival of Lights”, Diwali celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 31st. The five-day festivities will begin on October 28th and conclude on November 3rd.

NOVEMBER 16th – International Day for Tolerance

“Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human.”

SEPTEMBER

The BWE PTA and Cultural Arts Committee would like to wish our school community a Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! It is a time to celebrate, honor, and highlight the rich and diverse cultures of the Latino community. We thank and appreciate the many contributions and achievements of our Latino staff, students and families in helping to make our world a better place to live in.

Latina author of children’s books visits BWE

The BWE PTA’s Cultural Arts Committee was honored to host Ms. Ferrari Lopez as a guest speaker for our Cultural Arts for the 2023-2024 school year.

Ms. Lopez shared with students in all grade levels the process of creating, writing, and illustrating her book, The Adventures of Amazing Grace. She also emphasized the importance of reading stories about diverse cultures and with characters from different backgrounds. Her own family is of Guatemalan and Argentinian descent. Blending Spanish language and customs seamlessly into an adventure story with a dash of magical realism, the book is sure to delight children’s imaginations and is printed in a dyslexic-friendly format and font.
